These are the current facts for the restaurant industry in the US (the lodging and wine industries are growing as well):

  • Restaurant Industry Sales for 2007: $537 billion - a solid 5.0 percent increase over 2006 sales.
  • Restaurant Locations: 935,000 — serving more than 70 billion meal and snack occasions


  • Employees: 12.8 million — the industry is the largest employer besides government.
  • Eating-and-drinking places are extremely labor-intensive -- sales per full-time-equivalent employee were $57,032 in 2005 and notably lower than other industries.
