Workplace Safety, A Risk for Businesses of All Sizes

Businesses should focus on work place safety to help prevent injury and illness to their most important asset - employees. In fact, smaller businesses may have more risk because business management and employees often perform more diverse tasks, so there may be more of a loss if an injury or illness occurs. Take the time to make sure your business, employees and customers are as safe as possible.  It is good business.

The main statute protecting the health and safety of workers in the workplace is the Occupational and Safety Health Act (OSHA). All private employers who engage in interstate commerce are subject to OSHA regulations.  Moreover, workplace safety is critical for your business to thrive and grow.

When I do a risk review for businesses of various sizes, business managers may initially say they have a completely safe work environment.  But when I look around, I often see some problem areas that can be easily addressed.  This article will focus on how to do a basic safety review and how to address some safety issues.  Note that different industries may have additional Federal, State and county safety requirements; however, this review will address some basic issues.

A Work Place Safety Review

A review looks at the relationship between the work environment, the worker, the tasks and the tools used.

  • What is the size and arrangement of the work space?
  • Does it allow for productivity without accident or error?
  • How is the flow of people and products?
  • Do employees know how to use the tools and devices they need to use?
  • Is there safety equipment that should be employed?
  • Is the work space and equipment ergonomic?

Also think intense computer use and repetitive tasks here.

  • Is the equipment regularly maintained and used safely?
  • Is there water on the floor or anything else that might cause someone to slip and fall?
  • Do employees have the proper job skills and are they aware of any hazards that may occur?
  • Are employees encouraged to report safety issues or suggestions they have to improve safety?

Protection Tips

  • Make workplace safety a business priority.
  • Hold work place safety training sessions at least once a quarter.
  • Hire employees with the skills needed to perform complex tasks and train employees to perform required tasks safely.
  • Make sure the workspace arrangement is free of boxes and other obstacles blocking pathways.
  • Regularly maintain the facility, equipment and vehicles.
  • Use safety equipment, where needed.  This should include things like safety goggles and slip proof mats.

  • Make sure that no employee does a job that appears unsafe.
  • Encourage employees who do repetitive tasks or who use computers extensively to stretch 1-2 times a day.  This really seems to make a difference!Make sure emergency supplies and a first aide kit is on hand.
  • Encourage employees to report safety issues or suggestions.
  • Train management and staff how to react to an emergency.

Good workplace design and a focus on safety improves productivity, is cost effective and may cut insurance costs.  Protect your employees and your business.  Do a workplace safety review.  The quicker any issues can be identified, the quicker they can be addressed.
