Wine decanters are not only for presentation as we believe, it is one of the major component of getting the best out of your prized bottle of wine. Let’s start with the definition of decantation. Decant: to draw off (a liquid) without disturbing the sediment or the lower liquid layers (Merriam-Webster). What is a decanter? A decanter is a vessel or container used for holding the results of decantation where the clear liquid from another vessel or container and the sediment is left over in the original vessel. Most decanters come with a lid and a sometimes a rod to aid decanting.
Decanting will help to make a tough young wine a bit suppler, but it is only necessary if the wine being served is heavily sediment. What you need to do is to place the bottle upright overnight before being served so that the deposits will have time to settle down to the bottom. A few hours before serving, pour the wine slowly into a decanter carefully making sure when the sediments starts working its way into the neck as your reach the end, you can stop. If there’s more than half a glass left in the bottle, use a clean muslin cloth to strain the remainder. Never use coffee filters or tissue as they will alter the flavor of the wine.
Wine decanters are not only for the rich and famous because they are expensive, on the contrary, most decanters these days are fairly priced and can fit any budget. It is not necessary to have a fine crystal decanter for your prized wine collection with the belief that the decanter is as important as choosing the right wine glasses, but a wine decanter will most definitely enhance your wine experience a step further.
Wine decanter design varies from the basic functionality to the funky, most times these unusual design and functionality does compliment each other such as the Orbital shaped decanter sits elegantly on your table while a gentle orbital movement increases the breathing of your wine with minimal disturbance There are several decanter designs that are gaining popularity which not only for presentation but also serves a unique purpose to your wine. Two of my favorite designs are the doughnut and duck shaped designs. The funky design of the doughnut shaped decanter is actually a Reminiscent of decanters seen in Europe. This unique design aerates the wine more efficiently due to the fact that it pours through both sides thus allowing flavors to develop more. At the same time it keep sediment at the bottom.
The brilliant duck shaped is designed to have a funnel-like neck for pouring in wine and a narrow "tail" spout for serving. The wide body allows maximum oxidation and displays a wine’s natural brilliance and clarity. Other areas where design, functionality and technology comes hand in hand is the ‘no drop’ effect where the glass surface is treated with a special treatment that permanently prevents drops from running down the outside of the decanters.
